About us

Welcome to the McCarroll DNA Project. From this page you can join our project by going to the JOIN REQUEST in the blue bar above.

Whether you can trace your McCarroll or variant surname lineage back 12 generations or only 2, you will learn some interesting facts through participation in the Project and will help the genealogical community make discoveries that are not possible through any other means. Genetic genealogy has revealed some important connections that were previously unknown and undocumented through conventional research methods.  We are using this new tool in conjunction with conventional research to fill in some of the gaps that have long existed in McCarroll, and variant surnames, genealogy and to make sense of some of the confusing relationships that have been published.

The name appears to have Gaelic origins and appeared in Ireland and later took hold in Scotland, England, and other countries where the Irish immigrated. Or, perhaps the name originated in Scotland. Let's see if we can find out. Name variations include McCarrol, McCarrell, McCarral, McCrell, McCarle, McKerall, Mackrel, Mackarel; the name also relates to the surname Caroll and its variations.

This McCarroll DNA Project (or variations of the name) traces members of a family that share our surname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son, like Y-chromosome DNA, this test is for males who take a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA and they usually acquire a new surname by way of marriage. So the tested individual must be a male that carries the McCarroll or variant surname or believes that his father or father's father was a McCarroll and wants to check his direct paternal line by taking a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their McCarroll direct paternal line can have a male relative with the surname McCarroll or variation order a Y-DNA test. Females can, however, order an mtDNA test for themselves; mtDNA passes from a mother to her children but is carried forward only through the direct female line. These tests include two levels of mtDNA or the mtDNAPlus which tests the Full Genomic Sequence.

To participate meaningfully, persons testing should be prepared to share their direct male line ancestry back to the earliest known McCarroll either in the form of a pedigree chart or, preferable, family group sheets (excluding living persons. This invitation extends to all people, those from the United States, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Holland, South Africa, Canada, and Australia; just to name a few places where the surname can be found.

If you are researching this surname but do not have any living relatives who might want to join this DNA project, you may contribute to this McCarroll (or variant) Surname Project's General Fund by clicking the link at the left of this page. Your contribution may be made to help participants of a particular McCarroll line or for a non-specific participant in the McCarroll (or variant) DNA  Project. Just indicate on the contribution form (under "In Memory of") how to apply your contribution. Your contributions will be used to offset the cost of testing for those new participants who make a request through the Group Administrator. If you do not want your name to appear with your contribution please check the "Anonymous" box on the contribution form. You may also send an email to the Group Administrator indicating your willingness to aid a future participant with a matching funds offer. In that case you would not make the contribution until a potential participant responded to your offer. We post the matching funds offers under the News tab. If there is a response, the Group Administrator will contact you with further details on how to make your contribution. If you would like to remain anonymous please indicate that in your email. Note that there is already a donated kit for anyone descending from David McCarroll born about 1803 in Virginia. See the News tab for details.

Thank you for your interest in the McCarroll (or variant) DNA Project.
