About us

WELCOME TO THE McCeney DNA PROJECT! DNA COMPARISONS IDENTIFY THOSE TO WHOM YOU ARE RELATED ----- AND ALSO TO WHOM YOU ARE NOT RELATED! Comparison of your DNA sample with the DNA samples of other McCeney Family representatives currently in the DNA Data Bank, informs you if you are related to any of the families. If you match 23 or more markers in a 25 marker test, there is a probability you are related. A 25 for 25 marker match combined with both having a McCeney surname, gives a 99% percent probability of relationship. A 23/25 or 24/25 match, and McCeney surname, indicates you are probably related but farther back in time. In all three cases, comparison of the documented Family Trees of the families involved will hopefully reveal the time and name of the Most Recent Common Ancestor of the families. Perhaps almost as informative, especially if your DNA does NOT match with others, is the identity of those families with whom you did not match ------ 22 or less matches in a 25 marker comparison. Why? If DNA shows you are not related, I suggest you can put these families at the bottom of your research list and not waste time on further research on them, but concentrate on other McCeney families. Family Tree DNA informs you of those families with whom you match and provides you their email addresses. At this McCeney website,(website listed above), periodically, I will identify the early ancestors of each family group provided when the family DNA donor first joined the DNA Project. If several families DNA donors are subsequently matched, I will provide info on each of the different DNA donors ancestors which may result in family information from different time frames and locations. Please note that this information is as submitted by the families and has not been verified by Family Tree DNA. But I hope it is useful to you. Participating in the Surname DNA Project will provide: • A report of the participant's genetic genealogy, which will be very similar to that of his earliest known male-line ancestor, • A classification of the participant's "deep" ancestry, which gives insight into the ancient origins of our male-line ancestors, • A sense of camaraderie with all who participate in the Project, • Encouragement toward further research and sharing of information, • A wider sense of identity and relationship, as we begin to realize how we are all connected, • A chance to compare our genetic ancestries with those of our surname and its variant spellings, and • Genetic matches that demonstrate kinship with other surnames, giving further insight into our deep ancestry. The following Y-chromosome DNA tests are available. Please see the FTDNA web site for availability of other types of DNA testing. Y-DNA12 (12 marker test) Y-DNA25 (25 marker test) Y-DNA37 (37 marker test) Y-DNA67 (67 marker test) (111 marker test). The 12 marker test is best for ruling out relatedness with another participant. The the 67 marker test and the 111 marker test are the best for determining the nearness of relationships. DNA collection kits, which involve a painless swabbing of inside the cheek, will be sent to participants directly from the lab. Your payment is remitted to the lab with the completed kit.
