The purpose of this project is to compare the y-DNA of men with the surname Mawdsley, Mawdesley, Maudsley, Maudesley or Maudslay to determine any common ancestry.
Mawdsley/Mawdesley/Maudsley/Maudesley/Maudslay may be a habitational name associated with the village of Mawdesely in Lancashire, England and it may be that not all men with these surnames have a recent common ancestor.
The name Modsley may be another variation but may also have a different origin.
All men named Mawdsley, Mawdesley, Maudsley, Maudesley or Maudslay who have a DNA test at FamilyTreeDNA (Family Finder, y-37 or y-111 STR, Big Y 500 or Big Y 700 SNP tests) are welcome to join.
Recent changes by FTDNA mean that anyone with only a free autosomal transfer will no longer be able to join projects. This means that the minimum requirement to join is a Family Finder autosomal DNA test, but the greatest benefit will come from testing or upgrading to Big Y 700.
Members should also identify the year and the place of birth for their most distant known Mawdsley, Mawdesley, Maudsley, Maudesley or Maudslay ancestor.
