NEWEST RESULTS APPEAR ON TOP

16 May 2019
Here is a review of some recent Big Y results.
Note that the "SNP Progression" is the sequence of DNA markers characterising each branch of the Tree of Mankind from the major Haplogroup marker down to the marker of the most recent branch on which the project member sits.
All members who have done the Big Y test should upload their results to the Big Tree for additional (free) analyses which will reveal any private/unique SNP markers that they possess, Instructions here … https://www.ytree.net/Instructions.html

Group 9
The results of member IN43035 (PLM) confirm that (as predicted) the SNP Progression for this group is as follows:
  • R-P312 > Z290 > L21 > DF13 > L513 > S6365 > Z16361 > CTS750 > FGC13411 > BY11289 > FGC13421/2
This branch can be seen on the Big Tree here … https://www.ytree.net/DisplayTree.php?blockID=1438
Surnames associated with this and adjacent branches include Moore, Fritts (German), Coggins, Matthews, Devine & Diver.

Group 4
The results of member 657858 (KAM) indicate the following SNP Progression;:
  • R-P312/S116 > Z290 > L21/S145 > DF13 > Z39589 > DF49/S474 > Z2980 > Z2976 > DF23 > Z2961 > Z2956 > M222 > Z46375 > DF106 > DF104 > DF105 > FGC23742 > A1206 > FGC23739 > BY11687 > FT12671
This is consistent with the SNP results of another member of this group who is DF108+ (Note that DF108 and DF105 are equivalent SNP markers).
This branch can be seen on the Big Tree here … https://www.ytree.net/DisplayTree.php?blockID=4299
Surnames associated with this and adjacent branches include the Irish surnames Flanagan & Fay; and several Swedish surnames: Larsson, Morin, Forsberg, Johnson, & Johansson. This suggests that an Irish person went to Sweden some 1000-1500 years ago and has many descendants there today.

Group 2
The results of member 386442 (RKM) indicate that this group does not sit below FGC5659 as predicted, but rather on the adjacent branch DC63 (aka A10950). The full SNP Progression is here:
  • R-P312/S116 > Z290 > L21/S145 > DF13 > ZZ10 > Z253 > Z2534 > BY25450 > FGC5618 > FGC5625 > L226 > FGC5660 > Z17669 > A10950 > DC127 > DC125
This branch can be seen on the Big Tree here … https://www.ytree.net/DisplayTree.php?blockID=1282
Surnames associated with this and adjacent branches include Smith, Johnson, Gleeson … and further out McNamara, O’Malley, O’Hara, and Curry.
This group is Dalcassian and descends from the ancestors of Brian Boru.

Group 1
7 members of this group have done the Big Y test.
All have tested positive for either Y133171 or its daughter branch FT22415. These SNPs are on the same SNP Progression:
  • I-M253 > DF29 > Z58 > Z59 > CTS8647 > Z60 > CTS7362 > CTS7362 > Z2895 > CTS9352 > Z73 > BY266 > Z2900 > BY389 > BY356 > BY509 > Y133171 > FT22415
This branch on the FTDNA Public Haplotree here … https://www.familytreedna.com/public/y-dna-haplotree/R;name=FT22415
Surnames associated with this branch include Maloney, and its variants Macaloney and McAlonan. Surnames on adjacent branches (i.e. below BY509) include many surnames of English origin and some of Scandinavian origin.
According to YFULL, BY509 is at least 1250 years old.
Y133171 is associated with the following: the Pendleton Maloney’s, & the variants Macaloney & MacAlonan.
FT22415 is associated with the following: the Greenville Maloney's

A new genetic family is born. Potentially. The results of 657858 (KM) show a 7/67 match with 575262 (JM). This suggests the two are related within a genealogical timeframe. But ... they belong to the R-M222 subclade which is notorious for Convergence so this could be a "false positive" match. KM will need to do further SNP testing (Big Y or M222 SNP Pack) to confirm that the two members are appropriately matched and grouped together, and that this is a legitimate new genetic family (Group 4).

5 August 2016

I have taken over from Terry Barton as the new Project Administrator for the Maloney DNA project so this is a brief introductory note to say hi and to explain some changes.

I manage quite a few Surname DNA Projects (Spearin, Farrell, Gleason/Gleeson, Glisson, & Boylan) and I have a system that seems to work well for me. There are several blogs associated with these projects which you may find interesting, as well as my more general blog at DNA and Family Tree Research. I also have a YouTube Channel by the same name where I post educational videos on genetic genealogy from time to time.

I have moved the Maloney project over from the World Families Network format to the FTDNA MyGroups format (just because I am more familiar with it) so you will notice quite a few differences. Take some time to explore the new website and its various pages ... https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/maloney/about

I have also activated the Activity Feed so feel free to leave a comment and post your pedigree, using the format suggested on the Background page ... https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/maloney/about/background

Also, be sure to enter your Most Distant Ancestor's information, especially his BIRTH LOCATION. Suggestions for getting the most out of your DNA results can be found on the News page here ... https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/maloney/about/news

I have grouped people into three broad groups to start off with:
  1. Group 1 has the terminal SNP I-M253. Based on the terminal SNP markers of the people they match, their SNP Progression is probably I-M253 > DF29 > Z58 > Z59 > CTS8647 > Z60 > Z140 > CTS7362 > CTS9352 > CTS1679 > L1302. They should consider doing a Z60 single SNP & if +ve, do Z60 SNP Pack
  2. Group 2 members are likely to test positive for L226 (one already has). This makes this group Dal Cassian in origin. In other words, they are related to the family of Brian Boru and its many associated surnames (such as Kennedy). There is a new L226 SNP Pack being prepared and it will be available shortly. Members of this group should consider ordering it when it becomes available.
  3. Group 3 seems to be M222 positive. This is the genetic signature of Niall of the Nine Hostages (NOTNH). Members should consider doing a single SNP M222 test and then do the SNP Pack if positive.
Some members currently remain ungrouped but this is likely to change as more people join the project. I will be actively recruiting to the project over the next several weeks but please do encourage any of your matches to join up - every little helps.

Good luck with your genealogical endeavours.
