About us
To use Keaveney as the name of this project is perhaps questionable to some as the shared common name of this Irish family is O'Géibheannaigh. However, Keaveney is the modern accepted direct English translation of the Irish/Gaelic O'Géibheannaigh surname.
Some of the derived anglicised surnames listed below have a "V" sound in the middle of the name and some others do not. This comes about because of "lenition", which is a grammatical term that accounts for the non pronunciation of the "V" sound or the "ibh" in O'Géibheannaigh.
The Cavanaugh, Kavanagh and Kavanaugh versions of the name occurred as a result of a transposition of O'Caomhanaigh for O'Géibheannaigh as the original family name.
