About us

Group project page for the Manx surname KAIGHIN and its modern variants, KAIGHAN, KAIGHEN, KEIGHIN and KAIGHN. All Kaighins alive today with the exception of most KAIGHNS are likely descended from a single common ancestor who lived on the Isle of Man about 600 years ago. Most of those with the KAIGHN surname and whose ancestors are from New Jersey, are not genetically related to the rest of the KAIGHINS, and we believe that they may have originally been Irish Cains. I am leaving the KAIGHNS in this project due to the expertise that I have developed while researching this family and my desire to answer once and for all where the source of the Non-Paternal Event (NPE) for this branch came from. Besides the New Jersey KAIGHNS, there are 12 other branches of the family all originating from the Isle of Man. I have two primary goals for this project. First, I want to confirm my theory that all Kaighins share a common ancestor who lived about 600 years ago. I also want to find a link to our Scottish MacEachan ancestor who arrived in the Isle of Man circa 1092. Already, we have been able to answer so many questions. The Kaighin Y-DNA modal shows that we carry Norse DNA, so a direct ancestor of ours likely plundered the coast of Scotland. We have been also able to determine that our Y-DNA markers have such a rare signature, that matches on 3 specific markers (DYS391, DYS392 and DYS464a) within the I1 haplogroup indicate an almost certain match to anyone else sharing those values going back thousands of years. So if you are a Kaighin, please join us and help us discover our shared past.
