Y DNA Results

July 26, 2025

There are currently 55 project members including 16 males with surname Holbrook (including variants). Y DNA Haplogroups are divided into 6 subgroups as follows:

  1. I-FT250440. This group contains one person. The Haplogroup is assigned from a BIG Y 700 test. There are no Holbrook matches. The five closest matches are Lyons or Lyon which suggests a possible name change, an ingression of Lyons DNA into this Holbrook family line. The Group Time Tree suggests an MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestors) born about 1821 CE (1680 -1916 CE). Genealogical records connect this tester to the virginia immigrant line from Cheshire, England. More testers are needed for this line to determine the origin of genetic lineage.

  2. I-M253. This group contains one person. The haplogroup is predicted from an STR 67 test. There are no Holbrook Y DNA matches. The TIP report suggests an MRCA 1250 CE (650 – 1700 CE). The earliest known ancestor is Phineas Holbrook, b. born 1784, location unknown. Upgrade to the Big Y 700 test may help. auDNA matches are being contacted.

  3. J-FTD548. There are two members of this group with BIG Y tests. They match each other, probably 2nd cousins, but no other Holbrooks. STR matches at various levels for these two are the same four Freemans. The Current estimated MRCA was born in 1823 CE (1641 -1936 CE). https://discover.familytreedna.com/groups/holbrook/tree?subgroups=343809. The genealogical ancestry of this line traces back to England through Thomas Holbrook, the 1635 immigrant to Massachusetts. Can we trace the genetic lineage that far as well? Or is there a possible ingression of another genetic lineage into this Holbrook line? Big Y 700 tests of more distant cousins are needed.

  4. R-M269. The Haplogroup is predicted from an STR 37 test. There are no Holbrook matches. The closest Match is to John Beers. The TIP report suggests an MRCA 1500 CE (1000 – 1800 CE). The earliest known ancestor is William Holbrook, b. May 3, 1722, Wybunbury Church, Cheshire, England. This tester is apparently now deceased, and FTDNA No longer has a test sample. To further develop this group, we will need to find descendants or cousins for further testing.

  5. R-M269. This group contains one person. The Haplogroup is predicted from an STR 37 test. He has no Holbrook matches. The closest matches are to surname England. The TIp report suggests an MRCA 1650 CE (1250 - 1850 CE) A Big Y 700 and Family finder test are suggested as the next step.

  6. T-M70. This group contains eight Big Y Holbrook tests. Haplogroups from these eight tests branch from the Y haplogroup T-FTA74209. The most recent common ancestor of this haplogroup is estimated to have been born about 1387 CE (1147-1537 CE). This time frame corresponds to the time between 1200 and 1450 in which inherited surnames came into general use in Britain. This group also includes three testers from a small line of Hawkins which appears to have become genetically Holbrook about 1800.
