About us

The most exciting development in genealogical research in many years is the incorporation of DNA testing and all it’s ramifications. Perhaps the most valuable application for genetic testing is being able to confirm links that cannot be proven by conventional research methods of “following the paper trail.” Essentially it’s comparing specific genetic “markers” that have been deliberately selected, between two or more people. These test subjects could be those with the surname Hodnett or any spelling variation of the surname. Whether early Hodnetts in Ireland were related to the McSherry and/or Fitzwarin families might be a question that can be answered some day through genetic testing.

The conclusions that can be drawn by analyzing genetic markers are not as precise as we’d like. This is a fairly new and still imprecise method of analysis. Statistical models and probabilities are being revised constantly as more and more genetic data is collected around the world, enabling anthropologists and genetic scientists to further refine their conclusions. Once you have become a member of this project, your extracted DNA is kept by Family Tree DNA for a period of 25 years. So, years from now as new developments occur in genetic analysis, your DNA may add further significance in linking branches of the Hodnett family.

This project is limited to males who have the Hodnett surname, because only males carry the Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is passed from father to son. For the most part father and son have identical genetic markers on the Y chromosome. Periodically normal mutations at these markers will occur, which are critical to being able to make comparisons. Family Tree DNA will be able to calculate the number of generations two males are from a common ancestor. Female Hodnetts need to recruit a brother or other male member of their family to participate in this project.

Generally we prefer to test the older generation rather than the younger, especially if the older male is the last surviving in his family line. We don’t want to lose their vital data.

Family Tree DNA offers several paternal testing options. Being a member of a surname project enables you to receive a discount on the cost of testing. A 12 marker test can be done for $ 99. However, this test uses so few markers that it is probably more beneficial in eliminating family relationships than proving them. The more markers you test, the more accurate your conclusions will be. A 25 marker test can be done for $ 148 and an even more desirable 37 marker test for $ 189. The results of your test are placed in a Y-DNA database and when two people show the same identical or near identical results, Family Tree DNA will inform both parties, assuming both signed the Release Form that comes with the testing kit. You will also be able to compare your results to other databases worldwide. In addition to this comparison, FTDNA will estimate, if possible, the haplogroup for your values. The Haplogroup pertains to deep ancestry and tells where your male line may have originated.
