The genealogy of Hiddens with an English origin has been extensively investigated and there is little doubt that they are all descended from an ancestor living near
Hungerford, Berkshire in about 1480 A.D.
The 19 members who have tested so far can be divided into 4 groups based on their Y DNA results as follows
Green group 7 members
Orange group 6 members
Purple group 2 members
Brown group 4 members
The genealogy indicates that members of both the Green and Orange groups derive from the Hungerford ancestor described above
For the Green group the DNA results are compatible with the genealogy, however the DNA results for the orange group indicate that their
earliest ancestor is probably from North West Ireland, suggesting an illegitimacy in one branch of the Hidden family
The DNA of Purple group members indicate that they are related and whose ancestor was an immigrant to the U.S.A. from somewhere other than England
Brown group contains those who do not fit into any of the above three groups. One is from France where unusual surname Hidden occurs and can be traced back
there to about 1790 A.D. Another is from Ireland, and one from Canada, and one whose genealogy shows a descent from the Hungerford ancestor but whose DNA does not
match either the Green or Orange groups
