About us

Each member of our project has the ability to find out who they share a FamilyFinder match with within the project.  Given that we have both a FamilyFinder and a surname project, this tool can be very beneficial if you are trying to break through a brick wall. However, you have to be a member of a project to do this. This tool really gives meaning for each of us to join relevant projects - including geographical DNA projects. So, the more you encourage individuals to join this project, the more relevant the project will be to research.

So, in case you haven't located this tool through your personal dashboard, there are "how to" instructions below.

If you haven't taken the Family Finder test, you may learn more about the test at this link.  https://www.familytreedna.com/. We encourage all Hickey and non-Hickey surnames to join the Hickey FamilyFinder Project also and you should do this with both the Hickey Project and the Hickey FamilyFinder Project.

1.        Log into your personal FTDNA account

2.        On your Dashboard, scroll down to the “FamilyFinder” box

3.        In the bottom right corner of the “Family Finder” box, you’ll find some ORANGE text

4.        Click on “Advanced Matches”

5.        At “Choose which tests to compare”, click on “Select All” (includes autosomal plus X chromosome matches)

6.        At “Show only people I match in all selected tests”, you may choose either “yes” or “no”

7.        At “Last Name Starts With”, this selection is optional

8.        At “Show Matches For” click on the dropdown arrow and select “Hickey" Project*

9.        Click on “Run Report”.

10.      Click on the names of the tester(s) you match to see contact information plus Ancestral Surnames.

11.      Write down the names, contact information, and common surnames for the testers that you’d like to learn more about.

11.      Return to your Dashboard and click on “Matches” in the Family Finder box.

12.      In the search box, enter the name of your match or the common surname and click.  The results will load

13.      Once you have found your project match, click on the little box to the left of their name/image

14.      Scroll back to the top of the page and you may now select, “Chromosome Browser”, “In Common With”, or “Not in   Common With” to learn more.

*(or "Hickey FamilyFinder Project" if you have joined that project also. The Hickey Project concentrates on Y DNA where as the Hickey FamilyFinder Project is for those with Hickey relatives and Hickey surnames.)

Thank you.
