About us

REQUIREMENT to JOIN: An FTDNA Y-DNA test with a minimum of 37 markers. Any other tests offered by FTDNA do NOT meet this requirement, but can be taken to expand your ancestral search. The Herring Y-DNA Project is for all who wish to work together to find their common heritage through y-DNA testing and sharing of information. We wish to keep this a "pure" Y-DNA project and will ONLY welcome Y-DNA Herring variant spelling male tested members OR those who have a strong Y-DNA match to Herring Project members. This does not preclude females who have their Herring male relatives tested. We do wish to know the oldest known Herring patriarch that the tested individual is traced to through that member's Family Tree. Our individual members hope to make contact with others who are related in order to expand their family genealogies. Besides identifying the connections between the Herring family groups we also want to differentiate the British; Irish; Germanic and other families. We especially encourage documented descendants of the Herring line as listed in the “Herring Highlights” series of books (ancestors of John Herring who migrated to Virginia in 1642) to be Y-DNA tested to help verify “suspected” family members. In addition, we want to be open-minded and recognize and explore any other possibilities as they present themselves in our ongoing project. Please complete the Project Join Request below in order to join the project stating your connection to a Herring family lineage. Remember: An FTDNA Y-DNA test is required.
