So far three major groups of Hawleys have been indentified genetically: descendants of Joseph Hawley, first recorded as living in Stratford, Connecticut in 1650; another group of Hawleys closely related to each other, but whose founder in the Americas is still undetermined; and Hawleys neither closely related to either of these groups, nor to each other. Efforts continue to establish the lineage of Hawleys in the Americas, and their original families in the British Isles.
