About us

The Harp Family Project seeks to find common heritage through sharing of information and DNA testing. All variant spellings are welcome. If your Surname is missing and should be included, we'll be glad to add it. We believe, due to the number of Harp families, that it may be feasible to identify all existing major Harp clades and all subclades as well. We also now have autosomal and Y DNA proof that multiple Harp and Herb families from the region of Berks, Bucks, Lehigh, Luzerne, Montomery, Philadelphia, and Skuylkill counties are the same very large family, This family immigrated from Germany about 1734 with the Herb surname. Due to the name being pronounced as "Hairp" in German (to the English ear) the spelling evolved to Harp,Harb, and Herp in the more English counties of the state in some of the lines. Many individual members of the Herb family were listed under as many as 3 spelling versions on different records while obviously being the same person.
