About us

The first Akin to arrive in colonial America appears to have occurred around 1620 in Charles City Shire, Virginia along the James River, about 100 years prior to any other Akin variant spelling families.   Much of Charles City County records have not survived, so it has been difficult to establish records relating to the earliest of our Akin family in that area.  As the family grew & expanded, they moved into Henrico County establishing themselves by 1650.  Records from Henrico County, for the most part, have survived and have allowed many of the descendants of these colonists to establish the framework of much of this family.  Although, difficult at times, we are slowly but surely closing in on how we are all related.

The origins of this Akin Family easily date back abt 1000 - 1700 years to the area of Stirlingshire, Dunbartonshire, & Fifeshire areas of Scotland.  We have recently discovered, through a Y-DNA match, that our Akin Family in Scotland is spelled Aitken and the family we matched is located in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.  Both the colonial and Scottish family carries with it a unique Haplotype signature, quite different than other Akin & Akin variant spelling people.  After several of us having become involved in NGS (Next Generation Testing) such as the Big Y, we find ourselves connected in 4 subclades downstream of the Haplogroup Z36747.  Those subclades on the YTree are:   FGC37070, Y16486, Y16490, & BY4583 / Y22187

To Join Us, Your predicted haplogroup should at least start with (R-M269) R1b.Your Y-DNA STR's should have DYS464a=13 (some exceptions permitted) and DYS590=9 (if tested, ).  It should also have most of the following values: DYS391=10, DYS 458=18, DYS449=30, GATAH4=10, & DYS413=22-23.

It is the purpose of this Akin Project to bring together "ONLY" the descendants of this AKIN family, both the American Akin Family and the Scotland Aitken Family, into a "Dedicated" project, so as to be able to discuss with each other, without interference or oversight from non-related families, our research, and attempt to identify how each of our family legs are connected.

Sorry, but we no longer publicly display our Y-DNA Results, nor do we publicly display our Activity Feed.  In order to see our Activity Feed, you must have an account with FTDNA and join the Z36747_and_Downstream Project aka Akin Project through your “Dashboard”.  Keep in mind that your male Akin applicant must match the Y-DNA parameters set forth in the project, which will prove that you are connected to this Akin Family of Virginia or Scotland.

If you have no Akin male as an applicant to gain admission to this project, consider performing a Family Finder test with FTDNA, then join the Akin Project, and provide an Ancestry Account as proof you are a related cousin or discuss with us how you are connected.

We no longer accept any AKIN Family Member if he is a member of the AKINS Project due to Confidentiality concerns, sorry.  You must make a choice, join your dedicated AKIN Family Project or the AKINS Surname Project, not both.  We keep all our information Confidential between us.
