About us

This Akin, Aiken, Akins, & Aitken Project was created about 11 Apr 2016 and is dedicated to those "Akin" Families who are only descended from James Akin b.abt 1631 & his father, James Akin b.abt 1598 who arrived in Colonial America in the early 1600's in Charles City Shire, Virginia. Primary counties for this family would include Charles City, Henrico, & Chesterfield Counties in Virginia and to our Aitken Family in Scotland, most of which appear to have lived in the area of Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland & Glasgow area, around Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. We are especially interested & are diligently working on finding more information about our Aitken Family in Scotland, who matches the project parameters above, and are within a reasonable Genetic Distance of our American Akin Family. We encourage our project members to perform the bare minimum of a Y-DNA67 DNA test and to later consider advanced NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) testing such as the Big Y-700 to determine their affiliation with the SNP Z36747 and downstream SNP's and help support our research on this subject & our family. In order to be qualified to join this Akin Project, you must use the Male "only" Y-DNA Test, as your Akin lineage is passed down through the males of your family almost perfectly intact over the last 2200 years. Your haplotype should be R1B and have DYS464a=13 (some exceptions permitted) and DYS590=9 (if tested, no exceptions). It should also have most of the following values: DYS391=10, DYS 458=18, DYS449=30, GATAH4=10, DYS413=22-23. Using advanced SNP testing, men in this group should test positive for downstream SNP: R-S190 aka R-CTS2187. Please Note: While we encourage guests who have questions about the Akin Family of Virginia -or- have questions about a DNA connection, you will only be allowed to enter the project to ask questions about our Family, then we expect you to leave, as we consider our project "private". You can remain as a project member only if you can provide proof that you are closely connected to our Akin Family or have a Y-DNA Test that matches us & are invited to join. Our Activity Feed is Private. So, do not take offense if you forget to leave & are then removed. You are welcome back anytime, if you have more inquiries. In addition, due to the confidentiality of our information, we ask that if you choose to join us, you must not join a different Akin or variant spelling Project. The reason for this is we have spent an extraordinary amount of money on our tests & research, which has extended to traveling not only to other states to gather information about our family but also to other countries. We are aware that an Administrator of another Akin project has divulged proprietary information about our family to project members of their project. We want to keep all our information as private as possible. In addition, one of these Administrators has a bad habit of piggy backing on project members accounts especially if he had purchased a test for a project member, thus making it possible to enter our project "undetected" to copy information we have. Therefore, our simple rule is you "must choose" to join them or join us. It is your choice. This is our rule, we are private among ourselves, we don't care to share our family information with other's, just our own family. If you are a member of this Akin, Akins, Aiken, Aitken Family, why would you even need to join another Akin or variant spelling Project? We are your family!
