About us

The original Irish gaelic spelling of the clan/sept name was - Ó hAnnáin or Ó hAnáin. This later changed into several anglicized spellings (Hannon, Hannan, Hanin, Hannin). This ancient Irish surname belongs to two celtic groups of Ireland: Érainn (Fir Bolg/Belgae) Celts who arrived in 500 BC from the european continent, and the Gaels (Goidelic) Celts who arrived in Ireland in 50 BC after leaving northwest Spain.
A similar clan name for two or more of the four celtic groups that came to Ireland is not uncommon, as many other Irish clans also belong to at least two of the four celtic tribal groups. (EX: O'Conor/O'Connor, MacMahon/McMahon and O'Quin/O'Quinn to name just a few). Please keep in mind too, that surnames developed first in Ireland and arrived in the 10th & 11th centuries AD to keep the confusion of so many similar first name individuals from becoming overwhelming in their society.
Some Hannon/Hannan test participants might find they have Y-chromosome results that are very similar to the Gael - Niall Of The Nine Hostages - who lived in the 5th century AD in Ulster Province. FTDNA is offering the following website On Niall Of The Nine Hostages ( Niall Of The Nine Hostages ). Hannon/Hannans who think they might be related to him should consider purchasing their Y-DNA/mtDNA kits here at the Hannon/Hannan Irish Surname Project website. They then can follow those DNA results here - as well as joining other more general projects that cover the whole of Éire-Ireland.
