Hi Ann, I have a quick question pertaining to a post that is dated July 28th concerning John Guthrie and Peter Smith....who are they? Also, who is Anna Guthrey and where did they all hail from? Dates? Which group does John Guthrie attach with? Please and thank you.

The correct family belongs to GFG5 - William Guthrie & Eleanor Harris Abbott. Their son, John Guthrie 1757VA-1821NC married Anna Smith. She was referred to as "Anna Guthrey" in the 1794 will of her father, Peter Smith. Her husband John Guthrie was officially named as guardian of their children to oversee their rights as heirs of Peter Smith.

Thank you. I was curious because I am still waiting upon Phil Carter's YDNA upgrade and currently his highest match at Y67 is with a Smith, unlike Andy Carter who is a match with Guthrie's with 108 out of 111 to James Guthrie. Phil Carter also matches with up with Edwards and Street's but sadly, he's not a match to Guthrie's nor Carter's. Apparently, the Guthrie's knew and lived nearby my Carter peoples and they even went to church together. They all were something of club....if you get my drift! Btw, I am really enjoying working James Guthrie and we are making headway on the NPE issues within my Carter line. I also want to thank your project and the attention that I have received....greatly appreciated!

The key is Cumberland County, Virginia, which is the location of John Guthrey and Betty Ann Allen's marriage. Cumberland is the hub for Guthrie Family Group 4 (GFG4). That is the home county for the family of Thomas Guthrie & Sarah Oakes. They have a son attributed to them named John Guthrey and it is he who married Betty Ann Allen. Afterward, they lived in Halifax County, Virginia. Guthrie Family Group 5 (GFG5) is a different genetic group with ties to another part of Virginia (Hanover County). This John Guthrie is the son of William Guthrie & Eleanor Harris Abbott. Revolutionary War Pension records tie him to his brother Henry. John Guthrie and his family lived in Halifax County, NC and Buncombe County, NC.

Your reply shows why you've removed Betty Ann Allen from John Guthrie 1757-1821 in the GFGS Branch A, but does not explain what evidence or logic is behind the addition of Anna Smith as his wife.

John Guthrie was a neighbor to the Smith family. "Anna Guthrey" was named as the daughter of Peter Smith in his 1794 will. Also, because his children were named heirs to Peter Smith, John Guthrie was officially appointed their guardian by the court to oversee their interests in Smith's estate.

P.S. These are the types of discussions that would be great to see on the new site.

Please make sure that your FTDNA Profile's Ancestral Surname list includes 'GUTHRIE'. This ensures that your kit pops up in search results when new Guthrie matches are added to the project.

Your ancestral line belongs to Guthrie Family Group 1A. Guthrie Family Groups are created through direct paternal line Y-DNA testing, so only Guthrie men and their genetic matches are visible on the project's chart. Your own Y-DNA result is non-applicable to this project since it is SESSIONS Y-DNA rather than GUTHRIE. Any project member with new Y-DNA results automatically shows up in the Ungrouped Section until an admin either moves a Guthrie result into the appropriate group or clears a non-Guthrie result from the chart. Your Y-DNA results no longer show up on the Guthrie chart, but you can access your own raw data anytime from your profile page. The DNA test that does apply to the Guthrie project is your Autosomal DNA test, which due to the nature of its results has no public comparison chart.
