Welcome to the GURNEY surname Y-DNA project. The goal of the project is to identify and unite GURNEY family members using their Y-DNA matches. Any male with the surname GURNEY, or a variant, is invited to participate.
This project matches people using the Y-DNA test, which tells you about your direct male line - that is, your father, your father's father, your father's father's father and so on back in time. To participate in this project you should therefore be a male with the surname GURNEY or variant. If you believe there is a GURNEY or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are a female with the GURNEY surname, you will need to ask a male relative in the direct male line to take a test on your behalf.
PLEASE DO NOT ASK TO JOIN THIS GROUP IF YOU DO NOT MEET THE ABOVE CRITERIA. It is not a group for people who just have the Gurney surname somewhere in their ancestry, as there will be no possibility of a Y-DNA match in such cases.
To join this project, click on the "Join Request" tab at the top of this page. If you have already had your Y-DNA tested with Family Tree DNA, once you join the project your results will automatically be included. If you have not yet been tested - or tested with a different company - once you join the project you can order a test kit or transfer kit at a discounted price. The 37-marker test is usually sufficient to confirm matches within a genealogical time frame.
