BACKGROUND -

The GRINDLE DNA project offers a new avenue for finding genetic connections among early GRINDLE families throughout the East Coast of the United States.  Early GRINDLE immigrants to America , from approximately  1600-1800, are primarily found  in the Northeast  States of Maine and New Hampshire;Mid-Atlantic  States of Maryland,Virginia and South Carolina; and Mid-East State of Pennsylvania.

Utilizing Y-DNA, mtDNA, and/or atDNA testing, participants in the GRINDLE DNA project may

·        Identify others related to them

·        Prove or disprove theories or family lore regarding ancestors

·        Solve brick walls in their research

·        Determine a location for further research

·        Validate existing research

Men and women may participate in the GRINDLE DNA project.  Choose the appropriate test to serve your goal in research. Y-DNA tests are for males only as they trace the male Y chromosome which is passed down through generations from fathers to sons. Essentially the test traces the male surname line. mtDNA tests are for both males and females, tracing one’s maternal DNA. Note: while men can receive maternal  DNA, they do not pass it down to their children.  Only women pass it down through generations. atDNA (known as Family Finder at FTDNA) tests are for both males and females.  DNA inherited from both parents is analyzed and one of the results is the identification of genetic cousins.  This test is proving highly valuable to genealogy research and  is often called the “cousin” test.

Those with the surname GRINDLE, or a variant thereof, are welcome to join the GRINDLE SURNAME project.
