About us

This project was started to try to bridge the gaps that have occurred in the written record and to open up new avenues of research for the families: Gragson, Gregson, Gregston, and variants. There are multiple origins of the GREGSON name. Oh, how the thought of being a rugged Scot,an Irish poet or an Knight in merry old England has stirred the blood and fired the imagination of many a family genealogist! According to the "Book of Ulster Surnames", by Robert Bell, the name evolved from MacGregor in fourteenth century Scotland. "The Surnames of Scotland", by George F. Black mentions it simply meaning "son of Greg". One project member's line traces the evolution of his surname to the same conclusion as Black. His ancestry is from that of the Norman knight, de Normanton, who arrived in England in 1066 with William the Conqueror. The family held the title for a quite awhile, but the feudal knight, Sir Gregory de Normanton lost or sold his barony around 1260. Since he was no longer titled, he was not able to pass on the Normanton surname, and his children bore the surname that denoted "son of Gregory" GREGORYSONNE, which became Gregsonne, and then Gregson. We hope to find out the answers to our questions about our Gregson heritage through this Project. Y-DNA has become instrumental to our quest.
