About us

The Gloucester & Severn Estuary Project

This project has been established to help identify family groups from this area who have worked in or contributed to the woollen and related industries from the later medieval period until the latter part of the 19th century.

The subgroups will be categorised into local areas and oldest known male ancestor who can be associated with this area. From this I suspect that family groups will start to emerge that will share names and yDNA.

There are many family names associated with the woolen industry in this area many of which are recorded in the Visitations, the Lay Subsidies, Chancery Proceedings etc.

Family names include: BarnfieldClutterbuck, ColeCowles, DuttonFreame, Goodwin, Gregory, Greville, Gifford, Hancock,  Haliday, Hicks, Hill, Horton, King, Lawrence,
Niblet, Norwood, Partridge, Payne, Ricketts, Ridler, Sandford, SidenhamTracy, Veale, Watt, Webb, Whittington, Winter.

This of course is not an extensive list of names but these names have all long been connected
to the woollen and related industries in this area over many centuries.
