About us

The Glamorgan Wales Cousin Project is open to anyone who believes they are descendants of the early Norman Families (Marcher Lords) in Wales & England and any family they intermarried with between the 900s and 1700s. This includes anyone who believes they descend from the families from the castles and manors of Fonmon, Penmarc, Coity, Weobley, Barry, Uchelolau (Highlight), etc. in southern Wales or those families that moved into England to Lydiard Tregoze, Somerset, etc... Many of these families held Armigerous titles and when individuals married they might have assumed surnames from one another or their locations. Examples include de Port assumed St. John and a Mewes assumed St. John and St. John-Mildmay. These types of name changes can create multiple y-dna results for a single surname and likewise a single surname could potentially have multiple y-dna results. Families that appear unrelated through y-dna have been shown to share cousins suggesting a family relationship did exist between the surnames and this project will try to identify if possible how those family lines were established.
