About us

The main goals of this Georgia Smallwood DNA Project are determine the correct lineages and family relationships of the various Smallwood families who lived in Georgia prior to 1900. In particular, at least four groups lived in Georgia during the antebellum period and it is believed that at least three were related to some degree.

The first group being that of Elisha Smallwood, who died 1811 in Wilkes County. He was father of three sons: (1) William, b. 1760s, d. 1840s Wilkes Co., GA, married Mary Hendrick;
(2)Elisha, Jr., b. 1770s, d. 1840, Jones Co., GA, married twice, (1) unknown and (2) Nancy Davis;
(3)Mark Smallwood, who liked in Elbert County and died in Fayette County in 1852 and was married to (1) Mary Mulkey and (2) Nancy (nee' Carter or Martin).

The second group lived in the Jones, Wilkinson, Monroe and Upson counties in central Georgia. The three patriarchs were:
(1)Elijah Smallwood, b. 1802,GA, married (1) Elizabeth Poole (2) Sarah Ethridge;
(2)John Smallwood, b. 1804,GA, md. Delila Logan;
(3) William Smallwood, b. 1812, GA, md. Nancy. There three men were likely brothers and circumstantial evidence links them to the Wilkes County group and Elisha Smallwood, Jr.

The third group resided in Franklin, Hall and Habersham counties. The patriarchs were:
(1) Elijah Smallwood, b. ca. 1784, NC and was for a time in Clay Co., KY. He married Sarah Clark in Clay County in 1808. Per an 1808 deed, he was named a nephew by a John Smallwood;
(2) James Smallwood, b. ca. 1788, NC, md. Clora or Flora. First of record in Franklin Co., GA in 1818. Likely brother to Elijah. This group is likely related to the first two.

The fourth group is that of Francis Smallwood and his family in Liberty County, in south Georgia. This family has been well researched and documented by descendants and is not known to be related to the above mentioned three groups.

A additional goal is to have at least one member representing each of these groups.
