This web site was established January 2006 with the goal defining the various branches of the Gartman and Girtman families. We hope to trace as many as possible through Bartholomew and Barbara Gartman who emigrated from Switzerland about Februrary 1737 and settled in the Orangeburg area of South Carolina. At this time we will be researching the following surnames: Gartman, Girtman, Gartmann, Gertman, Gurtman, Gartzman, and Gottman. The original German spelling of the surname had an umlaut over the a which is usually pronounced as (ir), (er), or (ur) in English and this could account for the various spellings.
