About us

11 June 2024

The overarching goal of this project is to trace the ancestry of select branches of men under G-L640.

The G-L640 branch came into being during the middle ages, recently enough to where it may be possible to match DNA evidence up to historical records for the purpose of validating family research.  However, sometimes historical records no longer exist and the only evidence which remains is the one recorded within our living DNA.

This project was organized by two family researchers faced with that very predicament -- historical records could only take us so far before the only evidence available became DNA evidence. Our immediate goal is to determine how our respective brick-wall ancestors are connected, namely, Alexander M. Tomlinson (ca.1800-1865) of Richmond, Virginia and Hamilton Tomlinson (abt.1795-1853) of Hopkins County, Kentucky. It is suspected these two men are related to 18th century Tomlinsons living in Gloucester County, Virginia.

Though the above are our pressing goals, this group is open to any other men related to us since the G-L640 branch formed during the middle ages -- anyone with a similar mission to extend the family history of their male ancestral-line.

We are actively recruiting patrilineal descendants of the following men to join our project:

  • Hugh Tomlinson of colonial-era Frederick County, Maryland.

  • Alexander M. Tomlinson, d. 1865 in Richmond city, Virginia, m. Elizabeth Lord.

  • Hamilton Tomlinson, b. ca1796, d. 1853 in Hopkins County, Virginia, m. Margaret Reynolds.

  • Any Tomlinson man living in 18th century Gloucester or Mathew County, Virginia.

A Hamilton Tomlinson descendant has recently expressed interest in testing.
