About us

As a tool to supplement traditional forms of genealogical research, this Y-DNA project investigates Lunsford/Lunceford surname inheritance for present-day descendants of Baldwin Lunsford (abt 1764 – 1850) of Fauquier County, Virginia. Also appearing in various public records as "Bolda, "Baldy" and "Archibald" Lunceford, Baldwin is our earliest known ancestor. Currently, his origin remains unknown. Due to geographic proximity and migration patterns along the Rappahannock river, it is tempting to conclude that our Fauquier Co., VA clan descended from the colonial Lunsford families of the Virginia Northern Neck. However, we are aware of several independent families living in Virginia during Baldwin’s time. For this reason, we also are interested in the genetic genealogy of all Lunceford/Lunsford families; in Virginia, the US and world-wide. Furthermore, our testing has determined that there are at least four (and potentially more) genetically distinct Lunceford/Lunsford clans in the US today spanning the G2, R1b and I1 haplogroups. These clans do not share a common paternal ancestor after the advent of European surnames and are not genealogically related. Until further notice, membership in this group will be restricted to researchers investigating their paternal lines relating to the Luns(ce)ford surname. Specifically, those of the I1 haplogroup with a proximal SNP of S2077 (I1-S2077*) or below. As part of membership review, requestors must be willing to provide some basic background on their research project (preliminary Y-DNA results, family tree, etc.).
