About us

Last Updated 24 Sep 2023 by Steve Fanning

There are two primary genetic families that our Y-DNA evidence (i.e., paternal line) has revealed so far. Based on genealogical records, these two genetic families come mainly from four common ancestors (i.e. DNA alone cannot yet group our results by specific common ancestors).

Genetic Family 01 has one main patriarch, and this family came from Ireland and settled early Connecticut. Data from this project definitively proves that this genetic family is unrelated (within a genealogical time frame) to the other genetic family.

  1. Edmund Fanning (c1620 Ire - 1683 Stonington CT) is the patriarch of our Fanning Connecticut line.

Genetic Family 02 has two main patriarchs. Descendants of these men are closely related in genealogical terms (i.e. high probability of sharing a common ancestor within 24 generations), but the DNA evidence and paper trail show these two men were more likely cousins than siblings or father/son. Interestingly, their families lived very near each other in the Wythe/Carroll County area of Virginia in the late 1700s and early 1800s.

  1. Bryan Fannin (c1698 - 1765 Amelia Co. VA) is the patriarch of our Fannin Virginia line. Several of his descendants lived along Crooked Creek in present-day Wythe County, VA (due north of the area of Virginia where John Fanning and kin lived). Given the current Y-DNA STR data and genealogical information, his descendants are DYS464b = 15 and DYS557 = 16. Given the current Big Y SNP data and genealogical information, his descendants are downstream of R-FT40925.
  2. John Fanning (c1737 NC - c1813 Grayson Co. VA) is the patriarch of our Fanning Virginia line. He and his descendants lived along Chestnut Creek in present-day Carroll County, VA (due south of the area of Virginia where Bryan Fannin's line lived). Given the current Y-DNA STR data and genealogical information, his descendants are DYS464b = 16 and DYS557 = 14. Given the current Big Y SNP data and genealogical information, his descendants are downstream of R-FT188369.
  3. Tom Fanning (c1746 Ireland) is the patriarch of our Fanning Leitrim line. Given the current Big Y SNP data and genealogical information, his descendants are downstream of R-FTB91158.

We also have many others that have tested and are from different genetic families. We are looking for more data to further understand the genealogy of these lines and better group them into genetic families.

Below are the Y-DNA STR criteria we use to determine genetic family grouping:

  1. Haplogroup & subclade (e.g., R-M269)
  2. Surname variant (e.g., Fanning, Fannin)
  3. 37+ marker test
  4. FTDNA Genetic Distance (GD)
  5. FTDNA TiP >= 80% at 24 generations (compared to group's modal haplotype)

The modal haplotype is the most common haplotype for that genetic family. (Technically, this project uses a representative haplotype, listed in red text below, as opposed to the literal most common haplotype in order to avoid changing the analyses ever time the mode changes.) Ideally the haplotype used in the genetic distance and TiP comparisons is an exact match to the "modal" haplotype and has a solid paper trail.

Note that members that do not have a Fanning surname or variant are usually left ungrouped unless there is a solid 37+ marker DNA match with a Fanning member (including potentially SNP test confirmation). In this case, it would be probable that there was a non-paternity event (NPE) somewhere along the direct male line going back to 1300 (the approximate date when surnames began to be commonly used). It is also possible to be related via a common ancestor before the common usage of surnames. Otherwise, it is likely the proposed match is actually just a chance finding of convergence. One can read more about matching with dissimilar surnames at the ISOGG.

For members who submitted them, our paternal pedigrees are listed below, grouped by Y-DNA genetic family and genealogical information. Note that the DNA evidence only proves the groupings by genetic family. Any patriarchal information below is based on genealogical information (i.e. paper trail). These pedigrees were voluntarily submitted by our members. You can use this information to more easily connect your family tree to a given DNA result (or help others correct their pedigree). The kit number corresponds to the number you will find in the results tables under the "DNA Results" link on the left. If you are a member and have not submitted your pedigree yet, please email the admin team as this information is very useful to others. If you are concerned about privacy, consider only submitting starting from your grandparents or even great-grandparents to as far back as you can confidently go.

19 May 2015 - This member is from an Australian line of Fannings that we don't have much data on. FTDNA has no matches to any other Fannings in their database. The only matches are to a few Coles, but these are not strong matches. We recommend upgrading to 67+ markers. We also encourage other Australian Fannings to test, as we need more data.

This Y-DNA evidence groups this member with this genetic family. The closest four Y-DNA67 matches are all descendants of John Fanning (c1737 NC - c1813 Grayson Co. VA), with each match being a TiP8 score of 95%. We need genealogical information to corroborate, but it seems likely this donor is descended from John Fanning via one of his sons. It is not possible with Y-DNA alone to determine which son. Providing a pedigree could help, but for now we listed this member with John's son Joseph based on the member's most distant ancestor information.

  • No pedigree submitted, but lists most distant ancestor as Joseph Fanning b:1768, d:1848.

Even without a Fanning variant surname, the Y-DNA evidence shows a solid match and suggests a non-paternity event.

19 May 2015 - The available evidence is inconclusive. The haplogroup is one related to our project and the member has a Fanning variant surname, however this member does not have any FTDNA Fanning matches at either 67 or 37 markers. It is possible that more data will reveal this member belongs to a previously unknown Fanning genetic family. Upgrading to 111 markers may help refine the matches. With that said, at the 37-marker level, most of the matches (12 of 17) have the Holt surname. It might prove useful to join the Holt surname project and see if that helps determine the genetic family.
