About us

This is a Y-DNA Geographical Project dedicated to I1d1 individuals (P109+) with the unique combination of the STR markers DYS-455=9 & YCAIIb=20.  We are at the forefront of genetic genealogy; the coming decades will spawn an enormous amount of information regarding the structure of the Y-chromosome Haplogroup tree and ancient migrations of peoples within Europe.  This unique combination of STR markers within I1d1 males may allow us to pinpoint the approximate location of the origin of this group within Europe.  In doing so we may be able to facilitate our work by walking forward in our genealogical efforts to locate our ancestors.

A note on the name of this project:  You'll notice that the name in the FTDNA list of projects is shown as "P109+_DYS-455=9" while the public website URL is:

The reason for this is that Family Tree DNA wouldn't let me start a "Y-DNA Haplogroup Project" based on the SNP/STR characteristics; however, they would let me start a "Y-DNA Geographical Project" centered around the primary surnames in the project (please see the Results section for a discussion of surnames in this project).  The long and the short of this is that EDMUNDSON, GRANT, and THORNTON are the primary surnames in this project.  It is my hope that this does not offend anyone ... the fact is that everyone in this project descends from a single P109+ male in whom the mutation DYS-455=9 first appeared, and this was well prior to the adoption of surnames!
