About us
Welcome to the Edgeworth surname project!
The Edgeworth surname began in 1137 when Herman of Edgeworth held Edgeworth manor in Gloucestershire. Herman's sons had many surnames and the elder line of Edgeworths in Gloucester came to an end in the 14th century. In the 13th century, another Edgeworth branch lived in Lancashire and Edgeworths settled in cities across medieval England. By the 15th century, the family of Roger Edgeworth live near Holt Castle in Denbigh before members of that branch migrated to Ireland in the reign of Elizabeth I.
21st century Edgeworth families live in Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, UK, and the USA. This project hopes to connect these families by filling the genealogical gaps with genetic data.
FGC28370 is the current haplogroup of American descendants of Richard Lovell Edgeworth’s firstborn son, Richard, who migrated to the Carolinas in the 18th century. Testing 37 markers or more will help determine if all Edgeworths descend from Herman.
