About us

Welcome to the Edgeworth surname project! The Edgeworth surname began in 1137 when Herman de Edgeworth, a Domesday baron, held Edgeworth manor in the Cotswolds of Gloucestershire. Herman's sons used many surnames, but the elder line of Edgeworths in Gloucestershire sold Edgeworth manor in the 14th century. Gloucestershire Edgeworths lived in Warwickshire in the 12th century and an Edgeworth branch was established in Lancashire by the 13th century. By the 15th century, Edgeworths live throughout England and the parents of Roger Edgeworth, one of Henry VIII's preachers, live near Holt Castle in Denbigh. In the 16th century, Roger's older brother, Robert, founded a large family in Warwickshire and Robert's son, Edward, the Bishop of Down and Connor, had several children, including Francis Edgeworth, the founder of Edgeworthstown. Francis' descendants held Edgeworthstown into the 20th century, several generations after the inventor, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, established his large family at Edgeworthstown manor. Currently, FGC28370 is the haplogroup of American descendants of Richard Lovell Edgeworth’s firstborn, Richard, who migrated to the Carolinas in the late 18th century. The Edgeworth DNA project aims to determine: 1) Herman's haplogroup, 2) the Edgeworths of Edgeworthstowns haplogroup, 3) if Herman's lineage continued to Edgeworthstown, 4) other modern Edgeworth haplogroups and origins, and 5) non-Edgeworth surnames associated with these Edgeworth lineages. In order to achieve these goals, Edgeworths and non-Edgeworths who join the Edgeworth surname project should test 37 STR markers or more and share their results.
