I have just received my brother's Y-DNA and am looking for family. The earliest Edgar I am aware of is Benjamin William Edgar who came to the US from Ireland about 1820 or so. His wife's name is Elizabeth. They settled in Norfolk, St. Lawrence Co, NY

Hi, I'm descended from Adam Edgar of Chester County SC and his wife Mary. He seems to have moved from some where in PA to SC. Some distant cousins of mine have a website dedicated to that family here:

My great grandmother was born Ella Bell Edger. Her parents William b. 1814 and Amanda Edger. According to the census, Williams parents came to America from Ireland. They lived in Grant County KY. Not much luck tracing William's Family line to Ireland or brothers and sisters.

I descend from George Edgar m. Elizabeth, who likely came down the mountains from Orange Co. VA to Augusta Co. to finally end in Bedford Co. VA, where his will, dated in 1765 names his son and my relative, James Edgar, as his exer. James married 1) Mary Mason and 2) Pheby Wright. He had 10 children. If you are of this line or interested in this family, please contact me. Thank you. For ladies, I did put James Edgar as a DAR Patriot.

Susan and Joan, For many, many years there has always been this huge mixup of the Edgars of Hart Co., KY and the Edgars of Logan Co., KY, and it is still going on today. I believe this all began with the original John Edgars in KY before 1800, John Edgar of NC, PA and his sons, including a John Edgar jr that settled in Hart Co., KY and John Edgar of Bedford Co/Botetourt Co., VA that settled with his sons in Logan Co., KY including his son John Edgar jr that married Betsy Moore in Logan Co., KY in 1800. There are 4 John Edgars, 2 sr and 2 juniors that are always getting mixed up. I have extensive research on the Edgars of Logan Co., KY. PLUS for Joan I have a record of your JOhn Ewing Edgar (another John!) oldest son of William and Permilia Ewing Edgar, in Logan Co., KY as he is mentioned in his Grandfather's will, John Ewing father to Permilia Ewing Edgar. Regards, Sharon Edgar Bunek, email me at PS: now we have Edgar DNA from both of these Edgar families and they don't match, they are different haplogroups, they are not even related to each other.

Joan - no. James Edgar was married to Mary Mason first, and Phoebe Wright second. They lived in Bedford VA until his death. Mary probably died there too.

My Edgars are from Detroit, Mich. Thomas Henry Edgar, Anne Edgar, and I think Thomas had a Brother William C. Edgar and came on same boat from England - Landcastershire. William maybe Thomas's father and his mother maybe Janet Maculey. I also have reason to think his line has a Janet MacArthor.

Joan, Scotland is just a good guess at this time for John Edgar of Bedford, he could also have been born NI. His father George Edgar of Bedford VA, could have been born Scotland or NI, with older roots in Scotland. We do have a few DNA tests for those that descend from the family of George Edgar of Bedford VA, with little if any DNA matches to those Edgars that are known to have solid family trees in Scotland in the time period of George Edgar. However, we do have some family stories of allied family members that married into this Edgar family in VA, that we could possibly be related to the Edgar clan of Berwickshire, Scotland.
