About us

The Early California DNA Project has been created to assist genealogists and historians in exploring the history of California, by locating and documenting the pedigrees, as well as the matching DNA sequences, of those families who settled in what constitutes present-day California prior to statehood in 1850. We will be looking at their family ties, as well as their deep ancestral roots.

Potential members should believe that they are (or might be) descendants of a family who settled in California prior to 1850. They will also need to have a direct line descendant who can be DNA tested. This time frame includes the following eras: Pre-Columbian, Native American, Spanish colonial, Mexican territorial, and U.S. territorial.

If you wish to join the Early California DNA Project, you may both join the project, and order your test kit, by using the “Request to Join This Group” link at the left-hand side of this page.

The Early California DNA Project is a dual geographic project, meaning that we have provisions for both the:

        Y-DNA testing (paternal line)
        mtDNA testing (maternal line)
atDNA testing (direct and cousins line)

Direct male line descendants should purchase a Y-DNA test kit (used to test only males).
Direct female line descendants should purchase an mtDNA test kit (used to test both males and females)
Autosomal testing is used to find relatives on any of your ancestral ones within the last 6 generations.

If you have already been tested at FTDNA, you may join the Early California DNA Project at no additional expense. Just use the “Join” button on your Personal Pages at FTDNA. We are listed under the “E” in the “Dual Geographic” projects.

If you wish to contribute funds towards the Early California DNA Project, you may do so by clicking onto the words, “Contribute to the Surname Project General Fund” link on the left-hand side of this page. Be sure to fill out the form with the name “Early California” as the designated Surname Project to receive those funds. If you wish to earmark those funds for a particular surname, please contact the group administrator. All such contributions will only be used for test kit scholarships.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, regarding the Early California DNA Project, please feel free to contact the project’s group administrator.
