About us

This project is to study the ancestry of people with the surname DUTTON. A major variant spelling is DUNTON. The surname Dutton is primarily of English origin, a place-name referring to denizens of one of two villages, one in Cheshire and one in Lancashire. Another line of Duttons in the United States descends from a German family whose name was originally spelled DERTING or DARTING. Membership in the Dutton surname project is open. You should, however, have a recent ancestral connection to one of these surnames. Please enter your oldest known paternal and maternal ancestors, along with birth and death dates and places, in the genealogy section of your member profile. Our DNA testing falls into three categories: Y-DNA, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and autosomal DNA (Family Finder): Y-DNA, handed down from father to son, is available for testing by men of the surname Dutton (or any of the variants), or by men who have a reasonable belief that their paternal line may be connected to the Dutton family by a non-paternity event (e.g. adoption or illegitimacy). The purpose of this testing is to confirm or disprove an ancestral connection to a Dutton family along the paternal line, or to help connect your paternal line to a Dutton ancestor shared with other Duttons. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) passes from mother to daughter. The Dutton Surname Project is also interested in mitochondrial test results. mtDNA is available for testing by either males or females; it is one of two types of DNA test that females may take. It follows the maternal line of your mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, etc. Autosomal DNA testing (the Family Finder test) is available to both males and females. It analyzes DNA from the other 22 non-sex chromosomes to help identify or confirm family connections of possible cousins up to five generations. Autosomal DNA matches can then be positively confirmed through a well researched "paper trail." Check here often for daily coupons and other discounts. FTDNA sponsors seasonal sales and other discounts. Please consider contributing to our General Fund. We use the fund to help those who may need assistance with the costs associated with testing.
