About us
Our project is primarily represented by Drew families from the United States, with some interesting exceptions.
Most Drew lines seem to originate in England, some in Ireland, and a very few in Scotland.
Several English Drew lines begin with Devonshire and Wiltshire in southwest England, and at least one hails
from Norfolk in eastern England. Some Irish Drew lines trace back to English Drew soldiers from Devonshire,
in the 16th-18th centuries. We have members from the USA, England, Australia, and South Africa.
Many members have submitted their Drew Patriarch lines. These can be seen on the "Results" page.
Several unrelated colonial era Drew families have been identified, using y-DNA from project members:
William Drew of NH: b. 1623 in Devonshire, England
He migrated to Oyster River NH in the 1640's and has many Drew descendents in the US and Canada
John Drew "John of Plymouth": b. 1642 in Devonshire, England, d. Massachusetts
John Drewe of NJ: b. 1691, d. 1791 in Essex NJ
John Drew "John of Redding" CT: b. 1724, d. Redding, CT
Y-DNA strongly suggests that John Drew of Redding and Gilbert Drew of NY were brothers.
No previous ancestor for them has been identified.
Gilbert Drew of NY: b. 1732, d. 1812 in NY
This includes the Drew lines related to Daniel Drew, the famous railroad baron.
Y-DNA suggests Gilbert was NOT descended from John of Plymouth, above
Elizabeth Lloyd of NC: b. 1791, m. 1) Clendenin (probably from Scotland) and 2) John Robert Drew (probably from England)
She has many Drew & Clendenin descendents, especially in and near Kentucky, with two different y-DNA
signatures.
Joseph Drew of Scotland: b. 1744 in Glasgow, Scotland, d. 1808 in New Brunswick, Canada
John emigrated to the American Colonies, and fought in the Revolution as a Loyalist
Some well-known American Drew lines for which we have no y-DNA representation YET - include:
None of the early Drew's in Virginia: There are several Drew lines present in VA in the 1600's.
We also have lines from Drew families in Australia, Ireland and South Africa, including
Thomas Drewe: b. 1720 in Exeter, Devonshire, England
Some of his descendents later emigrated to Australia directly from England
This line is very closely related to the American line of William of NH, above.
