About us
Group 01
Members of this group share the defining SNP R-FGC4113, and may also carry additional downstream or private variants identified through Big Y testing. Surnames represented in this group include DeArmond, D’Armond, and Deyarmie. Documentary and genetic evidence indicate that this lineage traces back to early historic Ireland or Ulster (Northern Ireland).
Group 02
This group contains members of the Guinn family, who share a distant paternal ancestor with the Group 1 DeArmond lineage. Based on Big Y results and haplogroup age estimates, their most recent common paternal ancestor lived roughly 1,600 – 1,800 years ago, long before the formation of hereditary surnames. This makes the Guinns distantly related to, but distinct from, the Group 1 DeArmond lineage.
Group 03
This group contains members of the Burk family, who share a very distant paternal ancestor with both the Group 1 DeArmond and the Group 2 Guinns. Based on Big Y results and haplogroup age estimates, their most recent common paternal ancestor lived roughly 4,300 – 4,600 years ago, in the Bronze Age and long before the development of hereditary surnames. The Burks therefore represent a deep ancestral branch related to, but distinct from, the Group 1 and Group 2 lineages.
Group 04
This group contains the surname variants Dearmont and McDermott. Although they share only deep ancestral connections within Haplogroup R, they are distinct from the other DeArmond lineages and therefore represent at least two additional, independent surname origins.
Group 05
This group contains members of the Rice and Henry families who, though they share only distant paternal ancestry within Haplogroup R, do not appear to be related to the other DeArmond surname lineages. They are likely relatives through non-paternal lines or observers participating in the Project without DeArmond Y-DNA.
Group 06
This group contains individuals who bear DeArmond surname variants (Dorman and McDearmond), but who do not yet have deep enough SNP testing to determine their placement within the broader phylogenetic tree. As such, they are provisionally grouped under Haplogroup R-M269, the ancestral branch encompassing ALL currently known DeArmond lineages in this Project.
