A single change in the Y-DNA chromosome that originates in one man is passed down father to son each generation. That mutation, called Single Nucleotide Polymorphism or SNP, (pronounced "snip") DEFINES THAT SPECIFIC LINE of descendants from that one man and then succeeding generations adds additional new SNPs that creating new genetic branches. Your direct paternal line going back thousands of years is defined by these SNPs. Your paternal cousins, including very distant cousins that you do not know, will share some of the same SNPs that you have. New SNP matches, from current tests, will create new genetic branches on the Y-Tree.
