About us
The Crowl Name Association was established in 1985 by a group of people researching Crowell, Grauel, and similar surnames. At one point the project had about 200 members. As access to genetic information became more readily available, we transitioned to a genetic genealogy group and now to the current Crowl-Crowell-Grauel YDNA Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA. Although we lost some members over the years, we continue working to unite researchers with those of similar surnames and YDNA genetic results in order to aid further genetic and genealogy research and help matching members learn about the common ancestor for their family.
The project presently includes people from several haplogroups. Within those haplogroups are subgroups of people having similar YDNA test results. Our administrators examine the results of each member and try to group them accordingly. Unfortunately there sometimes is no match and we have to wait for new members and new results to arrive.
We encourage all members to get at least a 37 marker YDNA test to help identify both similarities and differences with other members. Further tests to 67 and even 111 STR markers, as well as advanced SNP tests such as the BigY-500 from FamilyTreeDNA and others can help with matching and in establishing more distant origins.
