About us
The purpose of this Surname Project is to provide an umbrella for people with the Combs surname or variant spellings (Combs, Coombes, Coomes etc.) to have a place to share genealogy research and DNA findings from Family Tree DNA or for kits transferred to FTDNA from other companies.
Back on February 20, 2013, there were only 21 participants who had joined the COMBS Project. About half of those are related through Family Finder tests alone. As of Jan 28th, 2023 almost 10 years later we are up to 253 members
Currently over 200 participants with the Combs or variant spelling of the surname have completed Y-DNA testing. These have been assigned to over 20 different Y-DNA groups.
There are also those who have done Y-DNA testing, but are not male Combs descendants. They will fall into the collateral or family finder groups on the public Y-DNA web page. Other participants are mtDNA or Family Finder participants and will not show up on the Y-DNA public results page.
There are also members in the group that share the Combs surname but they match to another surname, which usually means at some point in the past a male other than a biological Combs fathered this line.
Each of the 20 or so Y-DNA groups so far are separate and do NOT relate to each other (unless the connection is several centuries back), nor do the ungrouped relate to any other participants. Those of another surname, but who have COMBS in their family tree are included in a group marked FAMILY FINDER on the Y-DNA results listing. Kit #42761 (Family Finder) has a lineage that goes back to the same common ancestor as Group 2.
As more participants join the COMBS Project, we expect to see additional kits in each of the groups listed.
