About us
The Cloyd project has been organized for descendants, or suspected descendants, of John Cloyd, Ninian Cloyds father from Antrim, Ireland. Ninian Cloyd preceded his father James to America shortly before 1758 where he settled in Augusta County, Virginia. One of the goals of this project, other than to add validity to the descendants of Ninian Cloyd, is to gather samples from, primarily, the U.S. and the U.K. in an effort to help bridge the gap between Ireland, where genealogy records cease, and Great Britain. Ultimately our goal is to determine the roots of Ninian and his forebears, however all Cloyds are welcome.
Where did the Cloyds come from? Well that is a story unto itself, there is the popular view that we came from Scotland and are descended from the MacLeods. For some Cloyds that is true, however for many others the Cloyds may have come from England via Wales. Regardless of any eventual outcome from this project, all members are requested to remain open to the discovery of either possibility.
Coming from England or Wales is not a popular view for many people, supporting evidence via records from Ireland show that many Cloyds came from England or were moved to Ireland during the Plantation Period, it is not unreasonable then that the parent country for the Cloyds, of the Ninian line, may be England, with a very strong Celtic influence.
We are hoping to have a large enough member-base that will allow us to explore the true roots of the Cloyd surname, as it applies to Ninian and his forebears.
We welcome suspected descendants of John Cloyd and other Cloyds with DNA results to join, however we highly recommend that you consider a deep clade test to help support closer relationships with other project members and to assist in accurate information that will help identify geographic roots.
