About us

This project is for those who trace either a direct maternal line or direct paternal line to a Cherokee ancestor either using DNA or traditional genealogy. When applying, please include specific information connecting you to that Cherokee ancestor. While it is not necessary for you to be an enrolled tribal member, we do need to be able to confirm that your ancestor(s) were from Cherokee ancestry rather than any other tribe. If you are not able to provide that information, please join the American Indian Project instead. Native American mtDNA Haplogroups are A, B, C, D and X. Y-DNA haplogroups include subsets of Q and C. However, simply having one of those haplogroups does not confirm ancestry from a specific tribe, so we need the pedigree information, too.
