About us

This is the FTDNA group site for the Carswell family study.

The family name of Carswell in Scotland is said to be descended originally from the Strathclyde Britons and recorded as a family ‘of great antiquity’ seated at Carswell in the Barony of Renfrew, and which later branched to Carnswell in the barony of Carnwath, Lanarkshire and to Carswell in the barony of Hassendean, Roxburgshire.

The family has strong links to the Argyle region, particularly Kilmartin and Lismore.

One distinct group of the family is said to have a possible origin in Ireland.

There is a hamlet and manor of Carswell located in Oxfordshire, as well as a former Montacute (Cluniac Order) Cell known as Carswell in the village of Broadhembury, Devon.

This groupsite is currently engaged in the coordination of DNA testing in order to establish more information about the origins and links between now widely spread families.
