Some estimate that there are as many as 30 different spellings of the name, and there are eleven spellings that are known to have descended from the same man, William Buttram, born ca. 1735, of Rowan County, NC: Buttram, Bertram, Boutteram, Burtram, Butrum, Burtrum, Buttrum, Butram, Burtrumm, Burttram, and Burttrum. Some believe that William Buttram, born ca. 1737, was the son of an elder William Butteram, born ca. 1706, who, with the consent of his father John Butteram, bound himself to Daniel Scott, the younger, in 1714 in Baltimore County, MD.
