Welcome to the Burkholder Surname Research Project

Burkholder is a surname with many variants such as Borcholder, Borcholter, Borckholder, Borgholder, Borkholder, Burckhalter, Burckholdr, Burgholder, Burgholdter, Burkhalter and Burkholder. Swiss form: Burkhalter. The Swiss form of Burkholder came from Langnau and Ruderswyl, Emmental Valley, Canton Bern, Switzerland.  Notable Burkholders can be found listed on Wikipedia.

Burkholder's have deep Anabaptist roots. The lineage's background, trials and immigration into the US during the colonial period are described by Gameo. This family was among the early protestants and also non-conformists of the Reformed Church.

Hence they were at variance with both the government and the established church in Switzerland. They suffered all kinds of persecutions but held to their convictions. Some were sold to the Italian galleys, some were imprisoned, some were executed, many were exiled to other countries and when the migrations to America began in 1709 they came direct from Switzerland to the the US.

From an etymological view the name has its roots in the Middle High German elements burc  ‘castle’ (originally also ‘protection’) + halter from halde ‘slope’, hence a name for someone living by a castle or fortified town.

Goals: The immigration to the US has resulted in a lack of clarity surrounding some current lines association with documented Swiss based lineages. Participation in this project will lay the groundwork for investigating and potentially answering questions dealing with whom be-gat whom. :-) Provide a surname project to support genealogical investigations of Burkholder - of whatever spelling - lineages utilizing DNA based data to supplement existing paper documentation or to provide a scientific basis for establishing relationships where documentation does not exist. Project participants are encouraged to work with their matches to move forward with their particular lineage investigations.

Project administrators will not be maintaining pedigrees of project participants. Administrators are available to provide testing guidance based upon your matches and your research goals.

Support Research

If you have not done so, join the project if you are testing a paternal or maternal Burkholder lineage. You can join the project by ordering a yDNA37, 67, or 111 marker kit at this location.

Encourage Burkholder’s of any spelling variant that you are acquainted with to consider testing here at FTDNA as part of the project.  Information from cousins as close as 3rd can be used to help clarify what a specific ancestor’s results may have been.

Next Gen Y Sequencing is the new test that pushes Y-DNA research in the future. By ordering and making the results available you will help tremendously to increase public knowledge and provide information down to the tester. The results of this test may be utilized to link together distant family branches where no paper linkage can be established.
