Documentary records suggest that many Bunting or Bunton males trace their lineage back to the United Kingdom. Did all Buntings share a common ancestor or did the name develop independently in different parts of the country or the world? How do you fit in? This project can help find the answers.

The project is open to any male with the surname Bunting, Bunton, Buntin, Buntain, Bunten or any variant. The DNA test used to determine the paternal (male) line is Y-DNA test. From generation to generation, the Y chromosome is inherited, basically without alteration, from father to son, to son, and so on. For this reason, DNA testing of the Y chromosome can be a helpful genealogical tool. By testing Y-DNA it is possible to compare the results of two or more men and determine whether they have a common ancestor or belong to a common branch. Although various Y-DNA tests are offered, our study highly recommends either the Y-DNA 37 marker test or the Y-DNA 67 marker test, as these tests initially provide the best value for money and also allow more markers for comparison which is integral to understanding your markers and family origins.

For participants who believe there is a Bunting (or variant) in your direct male line, even if you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, please encourage a male in your Bunting-Bunton family line to participate. Many females sponsor a close male relative such as a father or brother or uncle or cousin to test on their behalf.

The General Fund section below is a facility provided by Family Tree DNA to enable people to sponsor tests either in whole or in part for other people. I receive notifications of any donations made and will liaise between sponsors and testees to ensure that orders for tests are placed correctly.
