About us
Welcome to the BROADWELL Surname DNA Project!
This project is open to Broadwell and related surnames worldwide.
The Broadwell name is a relative small population, probably most or all Broadwells relate to the first Broadwells known (today anyway) from England. Many Broadwells in the US tie their heritage to the Broadwell family that settled in New Jersey in the mid-1600s. Maybe all them do.. this is the place to see if that is indeed the case, and if we can find other relatives pointing to our English heritage from all over the world.
If you are a Broadwell, or a close match to a Broadwell, please consider joining our group. We are small today but hope to find more and more of our kinfolk interested in discovering our heritage.
To join the project, either:
- email the project administrator with you request and include information about yourself and your relationship to the Broadwell surname. Email link(s) can be found on the main project page, or
- search for the Broadwell project from your home page under "Join a Project" and click or tap the JOIN button you find there, or
- from this page, click here if you have not purchased a Y-DNA kit, or
- from this page, click here if you already have purchased a test to go to your account and make the request.
NOTE: There is a similar project Broadway-Broadhurst-Broad*, that our first handful of members joined, but it does not look like the Broadwell surname is at all related to any of the Broadway/Broadhurst families. As a matter of fact, based on our very small set of Y-DNA matches so far, Broadwell seems to be a fairly distinct group of its own. As a result, we have created this Broadwell-specific project.
When joining our group, please provide genealogical/pedigree information to the project administrator(s).
Who should join us and what kind of testing is helpful?
- Males named Broadwell may do a Y-DNA test. **
- Female or male researcher whose surname is not Broadwell, it would be fantastic if you find a male Broadwell wiling to take a Y-DNA test on behalf of your family line. This could be a cousin, uncle, parent, grandparent, or any known cousin of any distance.. all are welcome and helpful!
- It would also be helpful for any descendant of a Broadwell to take an autosomal DNA test, either with Ancestry.com or here at FamilyTreeDNA. The general recommendation is to test with Ancestry, which has a significant database of testers, and upload that DNA to FamilyTreeDNA to find additional matches.
- If your surname is Broadwell but you were adopted, you may still join the project. There are likely other projects you would want to join as well.
- If your name is not Broadwell, but you expect your Y-DNA to match, or existing Y-DNA does match, males with the Broadwell surname, through adoption or unexpected parentage, you are also especially welcome to join.
** Y-32 is the baseline to start with today, and is a good place to start to see if you are related to any Broadwell cousins. Ultimately, at least a Y-111 upgrade is most helpful, and Big-Y is best of all, but if you're just starting out, start with the base Y-37 offering from FamilyTree and then we can work together to see what the next best step would be.
