About us

The goal is to determine links among several groups of families named Brees/Breese/Breece/Breeze/Bries.

Records show that Timothy, Moses, David and John Brees were all born in Morris County, New Jersey, between 1751 and 1780. Over several decades, all moved west through Pennsylvania and Ohio and into Indiana. While genealogists have speculated that these four must be related, DNA testing of their descendants is needed to prove a genetic link.

Other groups with Breeze and Breece surnames appear to have moved to the Southern United States; their connection to the above group is unknown.

Additionally there was a Breese family which intermarried with the Gildersleeve and Pierson families. Many of these Breeses lived in the area of Horseheads, New York, in the 18th century.

The objective of the Brees project is to establish any genetic connections among these groups of people with similar surnames.
