About us
Today, many branches of the Bindon family (and variations, such as Binden, Binding, Bendon, and Bending) are found throughout the world. However, when genealogical research is done, most branches seem to trace back to Somerset and Devon in England. Another Bindon clan traces its origins to Ireland, but is suspected to be a branch of the English family.
There are records that show versions of this name (de Bendone, Bendinge) going back into the 15th century. As well, there are several local landmarks that are connected to the Bindon name, though it is not know which came first, the location name or the surname. The most prominent Bindon places are Bindon Hill and Bindon Abbey in the county of Dorset, but the surname Bindon doesn't appear to have a link to that county (unless a gentleman "of Bindon" moved from Dorset to Somerset or Devon at around the time when surnames became fixed). There is also a small hamlet in Somerset called Bindon, and nearby Bindon House (which is now a hotel).
