The Berlinger and Berlingieri surnames appear historically associated with Italy and Sicily.
Part of this family immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. Because of scarce Italian genealogical records, much of that family history is unknown.
My recommendation in joining the Berlinger Surname group is as follows:
1) Male Berlinger or Berlingieri--please sign up for the YDNA-37 test if possible since it will give a fairly definitive proof of relationship. If funds are limited, a YDNA-25 or YDNA-12 test will allow you to participate at a basic level; you will be able to upgrade later.
2) Females or non-Berlinger surnamed males--if possible have a male Berlinger in your line take the YDNA test per above. You may personally participate through a "Family Finder" autosomal DNA test. While results will not be as definitive as YDNA, they may be helpful in determining whether you are related.
3) If you have taken the Ancestry DNA test, it is a simple matter to transfer this into the project. FTDNA charges only $39 for this transfer and you get the equivalent of a full $99 "Family Finder" test without having to submit a separate sample.
