The goal of this surname project is to provide a central source for DNA data for those with the Beardsley / Beardslee surname (or other alternative spellings).
We are able to use the DNA information to refine family lineages, and assist those who are attempting to discover their family lines.
Interested male Beardsley family members are encouraged to do the Family Finder test, which now will provide a "baseline" Y SNP which will confirm descent from a Beardsley ancestor. If you have done the Family Finder test, please consider uploading your data to the GEDMatch website: http://gedmatch.com/
Interested female Beardsley family members are encouraged to do the AncestryDNA from Ancestry.com and then transfer those results to FTDNA (this adds the results to both DNA databases to gain the most insights).
To confirm your "terminal" SNP (and possibly discover newer ones within our Beardsley family!) you may wish to consider testing Big Y (please consult with the project administrators first to determine if the test is appropriate based upon known information about your lineage).
At this time the Y-STR tests are NOT suggested or recommended as the essential information needed for the project's goals are most cost effectively discovered by testing Family Finder and then, if warranted, the Big Y (which includes the STR data). The STR based tests do not provide the newest terminal SNP discoveries. The STR test can only predict SNP haplogroups, and even at the 111 STR level will only produce a (relatively) ancient SNP prediction.
MTDNA tests are welcomed, though they have been of limited use in the surname research.
