FAQ

If you have a question about the Averett surname project, please let us hear from you.

Who can join the Averett surname project?

Membership is open to the public but you must have a dna kit with FTdna.  If you are not currently a FTdna member, you can upload your autosomal dna (called Family Finder by FTdna) and/or your Y dna to FTdna at a small cost.  Of course, you can take a test of any type with FTdna.

Why would I want to join the project if I'm not an Averett male?

The goal of the project is to further the understanding of distant Averett relationships with the aid of Ydna.  One of the committments that a project administrator makes is to analyze the dna data and provide results on the website.  Administrators are provided analysis tools not available to project members.  These tools allow administrators to combine the analysis of your atdna (Family Finder) and Ydna from Averett males.  If you are interested in the Averett project and would like to make a donation to help the project, the easiest way is to be a member.

Can I add pictures to the website?

Certainly, the more the merrier.  Members and non-members can add upload pictures to the website.  There are currently two categories available, people and tombstones.   We ask that you limit your pictures to the Averett or related families. Make sure the photos are appropriately labeled.  Administrators reserve the right to remove inappropriate pictures.

What are the functions of a project administrator?

Order kits are reduced costs for members, manage the website, manage donation funds, analyze dna results and provide results on the website.

What level of access do I need to allow administrators?

Limited.
The purpose of the project is to combine the results from participants to further our understanding of Averett relationships.  If you are not willing to share your dna data with the project, the administrators reserve the right to remove you from the project.

How much of my information will be displayed on the website?

Your Ydna results, your oldest Averett ancestor,  your surname, and your FTdna kit ID.  No Family Finder (autosomal) information is displayed.  No mtdna information is displayed.  If you are not an Averett male and display of your Ydna information makes the display confusing, the administrators reserve the right to remove your Y dna from the website.  This will not remove your Y dna from FTdna.

How much of my information is available to administrators?

The information on the website, your name, email address, dna kits with FTdna, your dna results, your donations.  With limited access, administrators cannot make changes to your dna information, your profile, and etc.
